Visit a Winery
Sample some of the delicious wines made in the Bairnsdale region. Lightfoot Wines is one particular winery where you can pick out some smooth reds and fruity white wines to sip on. The cellar door is open on weekends, and you can sit out and look down on the Mitchell River Valley, have a glass of delicious wine and take in the stunning views. There are also platters on offer, made with local produce sourced from around the area, that complement the wines. If you're unsure what to drink, try a Tasting Room, where you can taste up to 6 wines and learn about the grapes and wine making process.
Bairnsdale Speedway
The Bairnsdale Speedway is based on the outskirts of Bairnsdale. This racetrack is a hotspot for motorsport enthusiasts during the racing season from November to April. Come and experience the thrilling atmosphere of the crowd, all excited to watch the races from the safety of the sidelines. Watch on as these powerful engines rev and roar as they race around the dirt tracks, all in pursuit of a win. The Bairnsdale Speedway Association began about 40 years ago, and since then, it has bloomed into a spirited showcase of motorsports with a collection of motorsports enthusiasts helping it grow.
Discover the Buchan Caves
An hour's trip from Bairnsdale will get you to the Buchan Caves, Victoria's most extensive cave system. The only way to visit the caves is on a guided tour. Spend time exploring the caves with your guide and seeing their magnificent beauty up close. The caves have limestone formations from an underground river that ran approximately 400 million years ago. Discover the stalactite and stalagmite formations within the caverns, learn about the history of their formation and fascinating information about the land and the caves from your guide. Following the tour of this remarkable cave system, spend time in the open air spotting the wildlife that frequents the parklands and enjoy a picnic in the serenity of this gorgeous location.

The Bairnsdale Golf Club boasts a well-maintained course with beautiful fairways and greens for players to challenge themselves on.
Gippsland Lakes
Explore the magic atmosphere of Gippsland Lakes, where you can boat across hundreds of kilometres of shorelines surrounded by both beaches and dense tree lines. Sail the sparkling turquoise waters as you explore the best spot to swim, snorkel or participate in other water activities. Or find the perfect place to fish because the fishing in this region is well renowned. In the Gippsland Lakes, you can find an abundance of flatheads, bream, perch and prawns, so if you love to fish, this is the place for you. Be sure to keep an eye out as dolphins also come through this location, so if you're lucky enough, you may spot some. Gippsland Lakes also has charming coastal towns and nature parks that are also worth visiting if you're not strapped for time. Overall, this is a gorgeous location to take your time exploring.
East Gippsland Art Gallery
Throw yourself into the world of art at the East Gippsland Art Gallery. The art gallery prides itself as a celebration of the diverse artistic spirit of the region. This hub of creativity and artistic expression hosts an array of wonderful rotating exhibitions that are great for the whole family to see and learn about. The East Gippsland Art Gallery values learning and experience, so they run a wide range of workshops and events to include the community in creating art. In the past, there have been workshops catered to all ages, such as workshops to make wearable art, life drawing, presentations from artists, holiday workshops for kids, and so much more. Mitchell River National Park
Located about an hour further inland from Bairnsdale is the Mitchell River National Park. This dense forest landscape has river gorges and pockets of thriving rainforests that all run along the Mitchell River. The Mitchell River National Park has many special historical sites that hold great value to the Indigenous community and the Gunaikurnai Traditional Owners. One of the most significant sites is the Den of Nargun, which legend tells is the home of Nargun, who is half-man, half-stone and took children who wandered far from their camp. It is requested that the cave be viewed from a distance to show respect. In addition to the cultural sites, there are walking trails to stroll along and marvel at the tranquil nature of the open forest terrains. If you have a kayak, you can explore the waterways and rapids; plus, in the warmer months, Mitchell River is a beautiful swimming location.
East Gippsland Rail Trail
Walk, cycle or run the East Gippsland Rail Trail. The trail begins at Howitt Park in Bairnsdale, continuing through the countryside landscapes, old forests, and the picturesque Gippsland Lakes before finishing up at the stunning Snowy River. In total, the East Gippsland Rail Trail stretches out to just under 100 kilometres and is excellent for a multi-day tour. This gives you time to stop into the charming country towns along the track to the Snowy River in Orbost. Don't forget to stop and snap a pic of the iconic Stony Creek Trestle Bridge on your way.
Howitt Park Market
The Howitt Park Market is a fantastic community market that runs on the 4th Sunday of every month in Winter. This buzzing country town market is a great place to browse through stalls and see what the local community has to offer. There are about 150 stalls each month selling a range of products from homewares, treats, fashion, accessories, fresh produce, baked goods, freshly baked bread, plants, and so much more. There are also vendors selling coffee if you need your morning fix and hot food to eat when you're done browsing.
