The town of Grafton is renowned for its stunning display of Jacaranda trees. While the trees only bloom briefly once a year, they pull in crowds eager to see their vivid flowers. The town of Grafton hosts a yearly festival in celebration of the Jacaranda trees to showcase the stunning purple flowers that transform the town. By late October, the town will be enveloped in purple flowers, a unique must-see experience if you're in the Grafton region. The Grafton Jacaranda Festival runs for 10 wonderful days of community events, including parades, parties, food, games, talent shows, tours, and more! And all are celebrating the magnificent trees. The trees have been around since the late 1800s and play a vital role in the town's history and culture.
The Saraton Theatre Grafton
Who doesn't love a night at the movies? It's a classic destination for a date and an excellent outing for the whole family. Visit the Saraton Theatre Grafton, one of Australia's largest and oldest theatres and cinemas. Since its opening, the cinema has been expanded to a 3 cinema complex with digital wide-screen projections, fantastic surround sound, wheelchair accessibility, hearing aid loops and air conditioning. At the Saraton Theatre, you can watch all the latest box office hits as well as see terrific live performances like comedy shows, plays, theatre performances, bands and more. Discover Yuraygir National Park
Just under an hour's drive from Grafton is Yuraygir National Park, a gorgeous nature reserve with dense forest, rolling mountains, winding lakes, rugged cliffs and stunning beaches. There is so much to experience and explore while in this national park. Kayak down the meandering rivers, exploring the waterways and immersing yourself in the bushland. Swim, whale watch or fish in the ocean that meets the park, lounge on the golden sands, picnic and relax among friends. Hike the 65km Yuraygir coastal walk and see the striking cliff drops and rugged coastline. Or, if you're looking for something shorter, get a taste of the parkland with one of the many other paths and tracks you can wander down as you spend the day seeing the sights of Yuraygir National Park. The park does have camping sites available, so if you don't want to rush, take your time and camp under the stars, then wake up to the beautiful scenery and do it all again.
Clarence River Historical Society Inc
Step back in time at the Schaeffer House, now home to the Clarence River Historical Society. The Schaeffer House was built around 1900 and was the home of the city's first architect, Mr F. W. C. Schaeffer. Today, the home is preserved as a museum with a collection of historical artefacts, items, photographs and more. In its past life, the home was adorned with statues, a sunken garden and rare plants. Now, the Schaeffer House is still a lovely manicured property and garden that offers a peek into the past.
Visit See Park
See Park is a well-loved park, adored by locals and visitors. It is a charming spot for a picnic on the grass lawns shaded by the leafy Jacaranda trees. There are two sections of the park joined by a cable-stay footbridge, so visitors walk across the small stream. Bring the kids and dog to run around, throw the frisbee, kick the footy and lounge on the grass in this gorgeous green space. Additionally, there is a playground for the kids to explore and play on, a water fountain, picnic tables, and BBQ facilities, making this a terrific park to visit.
Explore Nymboida River
If you're up for a day trip, why not visit the Nymboida River? The Nymboida River is a hot spot for all water sports. Come prepared for a day jam-packed with adventure and exhilarating sports. Did you know that the Nymboida River is where Australia's longest whitewater trail starts? So, grab your raft, canoe or kayak and see where the river takes you. If you're looking for a more relaxed day, bring a float, drift along down the river, swim in the waterhole and enjoy the water. If fishing is what you're after, you're also in luck. Bring your gear, set up and get ready to reel in some beautiful fish with other anglers reporting catching Australian Bass, Brown Trout, and Macquarie Perch in the area. Best of all, there are camping spots available at the river if you want to stay and soak in this gorgeous nature escape a little longer.
