Rockhampton Botanic Gardens

Visit Emu Park

Want to explore the surrounding areas? If so, a 40-minute drive will get you to Emu Park, a coastal town located on the Capricorn Coast. This is a perfect day trip location as there are plenty of sights to visit and things to do in Emu Park. From beachcombing along the main beach and having a swim in the clear waters, strolling along one of the many walking paths and visiting the infamous Singing Ship Monument. Learn about the area at the Emu Park Historical Museum or see some scaly reptiles at Koorana Crocodile Farm. Emu Park has something for everyone.

Explore the Capricorn Caves

If you’re searching for a different type of adventure, consider taking a tour through the Capricorn Caves. The Cave system is about 400 million years old and home to some endangered species and other native wildlife. The Capricorn Caves are set on 80 acres of land where you can explore the caves in a guided tour and even stay within self-contained cabins on site for a night away. The tours range from the Cathedral Caves Tour of the largest caves, The Capricorn Explorer, where you see more hidden gems and possibly glimpse endangered wildlife, and The Capricorn Adventurer, which explores some of the most challenging caves and features some tight squeezes.

Mount Archer National Park

Mount Archer National Park is a vast area of dense bush, open forest, woodland and dry rainforest. This gorgeous landscape is a magnificent destination to spend the day exploring nature and spotting wildlife. Walk above the treetops on the Treetop Boardwalk; this short walk offers breathtaking views of the park and surrounding areas. The Amphitheatre is popular among locals as a stunning spot for a sunset picnic with delicious local produce and goods. Pick from one of the few tracks to walk along and see if you can spot any wildlife. Or if you enjoy mountain biking, this is a great spot to practise your skills, with 33 trails of varying difficulty to bike through.  

Rockhampton Zoo

Located within Rockhampton Botanical Gardens is the Rockhampton Zoo. Home to just under 100 animals, including native Australian wildlife and other exotic species. Wander through the zoo visiting the wildlife and observing the cute animals in their enclosures. There is plenty to see, from cassowary and chimpanzees to adorable otters. And, if that isn’t close enough for you, get up close and personal with one of the wildlife encounters on offer. Pick from the cheeky meerkats, or you can meet an otter or hold a snake if you’re feeling brave.

Dreamtime Cultural Centre

The Dreamtime Cultural Centre is located in the North of Rockhampton. This centre is dedicated to Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islander people to learn about their culture and traditions. To get the most out of your experience at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, it is recommended that you join as many of the guided tours and self-guided tours as possible. The tours include sessions on The Torres Strait Islander Village, which teaches their culture and beliefs, the Didgeridoo, Djarn Djarn Dancers, Boomerang and a Native Plant Tour. There is so much to learn and experience at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre.

Rockhampton Golf Driving Range and Mini Golf

This one is for anyone interested in all things golf. The Rockhampton Golf Driving Range and Mini Golf cater to all crowds, from those who want to hit some balls seriously and those searching for fun. Get out in the sunshine with your clubs and head to the driving range to let off some steam or practise and perfect your swing. Or, if you’re looking to have some fun, play the mini golf course that has 18 holes to putt your way through and see who wins.

Kershaw Gardens

Kershaw Gardens is the perfect place for all, including families with kids. The gardens stretches across a kilometre right in the heart of town, meaning there is plenty of space to spread out and let the kids and pets run free. The Parklands are split into three precincts with open spaces and paths to stroll through and see what is around. Don’t forget to stop by the beautiful waterfall, which has a viewing deck so you can see it up close. And for the kids, there is a massive playground fully equipped with climbing ropes, tunnels, slides, swings and much more and not to mention there is the Fitzroy River water play area to cool off in, the monorail and the flying fox to play on too.

Rockhampton Heritage Village

If you’re visiting the area, the Rockhampton Heritage Village is a great location to explore with the family. Step back in time and experience the Rockhampton District from 1850 - 1950. See some of the original buildings, old cars, cottages, shops, and horse-drawn vehicles. This slice of history showcases life before electricity and is an excellent spot to learn about the town and life there during past times. See a vintage print press in action, learn about the Blacksmith trade, and you can even ride on multiple different vehicles like a double-decker bus and a horse-drawn carriage.

Join a Fishing Charter

Get out on the water and join a fishing charter for a day. Explore the region from the water and sail the gorgeous blue Queensland waters. No matter your skill level, you can join and learn how to catch a fish, or if you know your way around, get stuck into it.
