Kilmore Creek Heritage Art Walk
Grab a hat, bottle of water and sunscreen, and take the Kilmore Creek Heritage Art Walk. This is one the whole family can appreciate, including your four-legged friends. The Heritage Trail is a gorgeous nature track with lush, vibrant trees that line the pathway. It's a gentle 2 km one-way track that is divided into 3 stages. The first is Union Street to Skehan Place; this section shows the history of the area and the Indigenous clans who lived around Kilmore; the second section is Foote Street to Rutledge Street, where the art depicts the colonial settlement; and lastly, Sam Gabrielle Reserve which was designed by the young people of Kilmore sharing their thoughts for the town's future. This is a lovely way to spend time getting to know the town's history while enjoying a stroll in a picturesque location.
Mount Piper Nature Reserve
Get outside and seize the day with a hike up Mount Piper. Mount Piper offers a few walking trails, including the summit hike, which is a challenging test of fitness. The track is about 950 m or 30 minutes long and delivers a warm sense of accomplishment once done. Nature lovers will admire the spectacular views from the summit as they gaze over the stunning Broadford scenery below. The other trail is the Mt Piper Circuit Walk, a 3.2 km trail around the base still providing beautiful scenery of the bushland reserve. While wandering, keep an eye out for the endangered Blue Ant Butterfly and the Golden Sun Moth that call this land home. There are also many species of birds to spot too. The Mount Piper Nature Reserve offers an outdoor adventure near Kilmore, where visitors can connect with nature.
Pass the day at Hudson Park
Spend the afternoon at Hudson Park, a terrific hotspot loved by the locals. Grab the kids and head to the park for a fun afternoon, playing and soaking in the sunshine. The park is a family-friendly destination with a playground area, picnic tables, BBQs, a skate park and alluring gardens. The kids will love running and playing throughout the park and gardens, and there is ample space to kick a football or play chasey. They will also adore the playground, which has equipment for balance, climbing, sliding, and swinging. If they have bikes, scooters or skateboards, test out their skills in the skate park, which has rails to glide and grind, as well as ramps and quarter pipes. Use the picnic facilities to cook a nice lunch in the park and finish the afternoon with a stroll through the gardens.
Explore the Heights of Hanging Rock
Hanging Rock is a breathtaking outdoor hiking destination. The parkland is a 30-minute drive from Kilmore, with magnificent views from the top. It's a superb place to hike and see the sights, like the Black Hole of Calcutta, The Eagle, The Chapel, and Lover's Leap. Stop by the Discovery Centre first to read the informational displays and learn the history and geology of the Rock, as well as the eerie tales involving the disappearance of a group of schoolgirls at Hanging Rock in 1901. Wander through the reserve, taking in the gorgeous flora and spotting any fauna within. There are over 40 species of birds alone, plus gliders, koalas and other native species. For a unique experience, take a ranger-guided night walk, which runs only during the warmer months. And, if you're feeling hungry, there is, of course, the Hanging Rock Café located in the reserve.
Cool off in the Broadford Outdoor Pool
When the Australian summer heat hits, there's no better thing to do than strip off for a swim. And without close access to a beach, the local pool is the best place to be. The kids will love making a splash and swimming in the pool facilities at the Broadford Outdoor Pool. The pool operates during the summer season, from the first weekend in December to Labour Day in March. That gives your family a good few months to cherish the cool waters, swimming laps, spending time with friends and lounging by the pool. The pool features 25 m of chilled water for visitors to swim. Next to the main pool is a smaller-sized pool, covered with a shade sail for toddlers to play in. There are also shaded seats to escape the sun and a small area of grass should you wish to lounge on the grass and dry off in the sun.
