Hummock Hill Lookout

See Whyalla from a new perspective. The Hummock Hill Lookout is a short walk along a circuit that takes about 12 minutes to complete from start to finish. When you reach the lookout, you will be rewarded with 360-degree picturesque views looking out over the eastern end of Whyalla. Spend time gazing out across the vast ocean and breathing in the fresh air. Hummock Hill Lookout is a great place to watch the sunrise over Whyalla or see a gorgeous sunset. So be sure to remember your camera.

Visit Whyalla Maritime Museum

Spend a few hours at the Whyalla Maritime Museum. Easily spotted by the huge HMAS Whyalla, which interestingly was the first ship built in the Whyalla Shipyards in 1941. Today, it stands tall next to the museum, and visitors can walk under the ship before boarding for a tour. You can find a wonderful collection of artefacts and memorabilia in the maritime museum. There is a range of fascinating exhibitions, including a World War 2 Gallery and The BHP Shipbuilding Gallery, which follows the shipbuilding that took place in Whyalla. These are only a few of the exhibitions you can expect to see. Additionally, one of Australia's largest H0 gauge model railways is on display, which features over 400 metres of track.

Have a Beach Day

Whyalla is a coastal town, and that means that there are plenty of beaches to spend the day relaxing at that are all within short distances. Pack your thongs and get your beach bag ready for a day in the sun while you swim at beaches along the coast. Most notable and right in the heart of Whyalla is the Whyalla Foreshore, which offers shallow waters perfect for families. There is also a huge jetty to walk along, and it is the best spot to fish for fish, crabs and squid. Additionally, the foreshore centre has a cafe, toilets and change rooms, and a playground, making this spot great for families.

Cycling and Mountain Biking

Grab your bike and get out into the fresh air. We recommend doing your research before heading out to see which paths suit your skill levels best. There is a large range of mountain bike paths and cycling trails in Whyalla for riders to explore. Mountain bike paths range from easy to complex, and there are plenty to choose from. The locals in the area ride through the Mt. Laura area and the surrounding hills, so if you're a mountain biking enthusiast, get online and check it out.  

Whyalla Wetlands

Walk or cycle through the Whyalla Wetlands. The Whyalla Wetlands are easy to get to via public transport, wheelchair accessible, and you can bring your furry friend for a stroll too. There are a few circuits to choose from of varying lengths, the longest being 2.9 km, so you can wander through the wetlands and unwind. There are BBQs on site, a playground with a flying fox to keep the kids occupied and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy being in nature. Bring a picnic lunch with you to enjoy on the grass or cook up some sausages on the BBQ. This is a fantastic place to spend some time outside.

Point Lowly Lighthouse

A visit to the Point Lowly Lighthouse is a must. Built in 1833, the lighthouse and lighthouse keeper's cottages are the oldest buildings in the area and are full of history. The Point Lowly Lighthouse was manned for a whopping 90 years, and today it is an iconic piece of Whyalla's history. Spend time exploring the area, walking along the beach, beachcombing the area, swimming in the gorgeous blue waters under the lighthouse and, of course, snapping a few photos of the lighthouse in all its glory. It's worth noting that you can book and stay in the lighthouse keeper's cottages, or you can even camp out under the stars. The Point Lowly area is known to be a great spot for stargazing as there is minimal light pollution.

Whyalla Conservation Park

Explore the Whyalla Conservation Park. There are trails to walk through and discover natural bush landscapes that feature the iconic Australian red dirt. It is recommended to plan your visit for either sunrise or sunset, as these are when the red sandstone is glowing as the sun hits it in just the right way. Wear your best hiking shoes and don't forget your hat, then climb to the top of Red Dog Hill, where you will see fantastic views over the bushland below. If you're keen to spot some wildlife, pack your binoculars, as there are plenty of birds and animals to see.

Cuttlefest and Snorkel Trail

Cuttlefish season in the Whyalla area is known as Cuttlefest. Cuttlefest has been featured on David Attenborough's Blue Planet II and is a fascinating event that people travel from all over the world to experience. This is where massive numbers of Australian Giant Cuttlefish come to the area during the winter months. So, from May to August, you can join a snorkelling or diving tour in the crisp waters near Whyalla and explore the underwater locations where you can swim alongside the gorgeous giant cuttlefish. This is a wonderful opportunity like no other, where you can experience these stunning fish up close and in their natural habitat.  

Ada Ryan Gardens

The Ada Ryan Gardens are a popular spot among locals and visitors alike. The gardens are a great spot to sit out in the sunshine and enjoy a picnic. There are plenty of spots to spread out along the lawns and between the gardens. There is even a free BBQ on site where you can bring something along to cook up on the BBQ. The gardens also have a range of other facilities that are open and accessible to the public, including tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and a playground for the kids. The paths are also paved and wheelchair accessible.
